Authorities urge residents to stomp on invasive spotted lanternflies

(WJAR) — As the population of invasive spotted lanternflies increase in the Southern New England area, authorities are urging residents to stomp on the lanternflies if they spot one.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said the spotted lanternflies have become prevalent over the years, and that they cause significant damage to vineyards and orchards.

According to officials, the invasive species feed on varies types of plants, and can kill grapevines and small tree saplings.

“We are asking people if they come across them to squish them. It’s a simple way to help protect our orchards and vineyards,” RIDEM’s Cynthia Kwolek said…
