Since its inception in 1915, the FSView & Florida Flambeau has seen many drastic changes. Its been affiliated with Florida State and independent, published on schedules ranging from daily to weekly and printed in both broadsheet and tabloid formats. Today, it exists exclusively online.
The Flambeau began publication at Florida State College for Women (FSCW) on Jan. 23, 1915. The first editor-in-chief of the Flambeau, Ruby Leach, was inspired to start a student newspaper after noticing a gap in the Tallahassee Democrat’s coverage of FSCW. Over the years, the Flambeau’s staff covered topics ranging from campus life and Florida politics to the Vietnam War and racial segregation.
“The culture? Wonderfully scruffy, intellectual, progressive, rebellious. What college ought to be,” former Flambeau journalist and FSU English professor Diane Roberts said. “I started writing in about 1983 and carried on and off for 10 more years.”…
