Warm and Sunny Today, Cool and Rainy Tomorrow

  • High temperatures in the mid to upper 70s today
  • Showers and storms late tonight and into Wednesday
  • Much cooler temperatures by the end of the week

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Dry weather continues today under the influence of high pressure to the east. Areas of patchy fog are possible again early this morning, especially along and west of the Kettle Moraine. Any areas of fog that develop will dissipate as the sun rises and heats things up.

By this afternoon, scattered to broken stratocumulus clouds are expected to develop, but mostly sunny skies will persist. High temperatures will reach the middle to upper 70s, making for a pleasant early September day.

What’s Coming Up…

Rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to begin late tonight and will continue through much of Wednesday as the cold front moves across the area. While severe weather is not expected, a few storms could produce gusty winds and brief heavy downpours. Rainfall totals are expected to average between 0.25 to 0.50 inches, with locally higher amounts up to 1 inch in areas that see multiple or stronger storms.

By Wednesday evening, conditions will dry out as breezy northwest winds develop behind the cold front. A strong push of cold air will follow, with overnight lows dropping into the low 40s, and even upper 30s in a few spots.

Looking Ahead…

As northwesterly flow continues behind the front, cold air advection will continue to work into the area. Highs will be unseasonably cool, dropping into the 50s and low 60s by Thursday. Record-cold high temperatures around 60 degrees are possible on Thursday in Milwaukee and Madison…
