Tuesday’s Five Facts
[1] Man with violent past accused of killing two dogs after dispute – Police say 31-year-old Justin Leverette was in his car arguing with his girlfriend’s two brothers. Police say one of the the men’s dogs approached Leverette’s car and he grabbed the dog by its neck and shot it. They say he drove away and ran over his own dog. Witnesses said he stopped a few houses down and shot at them eight times. No people were injured, but the two dogs died from their injuries. Leverette is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, extreme animal cruelty, felon in possession of a firearm, and shooting from a vehicle.
[2] Former NMSP officer facing drug charges – A former state police officer is now accused of drug trafficking. Last month, a state police officer pulled over Carlos Antonio Perea and Catherine Anne Schmidt. During the traffic stop, police say the two were giving conflicting stories, leading to a K9 search. Police say they found about 140 pounds of fentanyl in the car and its tires. Perea is facing charges of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. According to state police, Perea retired in 2019.
[3] Rounds of storms ahead & warm air around New Mexico – Tuesday will bring another round of isolated afternoon storms, especially in the mountains and nearby areas. Heading into the middle of the week, high pressure will build to the southeast of the state. This will bring more moisture into New Mexico.
