MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) — Mount Pleasant leaders are considering relaxing leash laws for dogs, but some community members worry it would cause town parks to turn primarily into dog parks.Edwards Park is a historic spot in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant, where residents come to walk their dogs, read a book, or bring children to play.“We’ve been here since 1972, so we’ve seen all the changes over the years, and we’ve loved it,” said Barbara Smith, a resident.
Recently, Mount Pleasant has been enforcing leash laws at the park, where neighbors used to bring dogs to play freely. Neighbors said they did not mind the previous off-leash meet-ups, but as town council considers changing the rules to allow broader off-leash hours, some worry the park will be overtaken.
“We wanted them to be sure they knew the neighbors were fine with the dogs being off leash there, but didn’t want to be a movement to designate it as a dog park with signage, or advertising or fencing because then it designates it for one purpose instead of keeping it open for all purposes,” said Janet Newham, resident…
