KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Valley Authority has agreed to work with another energy giant to help power more homes and businesses. The collaboration is focused on next-generation nuclear power.
TVA signed an agreement with ENTRA1 Energy to develop up to six energy plants that will provide up to six gigawatts of new nuclear power on sites in TVA’s seven-state region. This is enough energy to power 4.5 million homes or 60 new data centers. This comes at a time when electricity demand is increasing, partly due to the rise of artificial intelligence.

The ENTRA1 Energy Plants would have small modular reactors (SMRs) developed by NuScale inside. So far, this is the only SMR to receive Part 52 approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. ENTRA1 is one of the companies working to bring SMRs to the commercial market.
“The ENTRA1 team brings deep experience in investing in, developing, and executing power infrastructure. Our focus is on deploying best-in-class American technologies in the nuclear SMR and natural gas-fired power sectors – and that is what we are doing in the immediate term via our partnership with NuScale SMRs. We’re investing in the next generation of power solutions to meet the country’s growing energy demands,” said Skip Alvarado, ENTRA1 Energy Chief Projects Officer.
