Mayor Evans: City preparing to introduce school bus arm cameras to keep students safe

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As students prepare to return to school, the City of Rochester has some traffic safety initiatives aiming to keep them safe while they board the school bus or walk.

Mayor Malik Evans said at a news conference on Tuesday that the city is gearing up to introduce a new school bus arm camera program. As News10NBC has covered, the camera will take a snapshot of cars that pass by stopped school buses. According to the state, an estimated 50,000 vehicles illegally pass school buses in New York every day.

Last October, Rochester City Council voted unanimously to enter an agreement with BusPatrol, a provider of the cameras. The Greece Central School District has already rolled out the cameras. Evans said he will release more details later this fall about the program…
