Man killed at Mazomanie cabin identified, no evidence he was targeted

MAZOMANIE, Wis. — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said a 70-year-old man was killed by a 23-year-old man who had broken into his Mazomanie cabin and was staying there.

The sheriff’s office began investigating after the 70-year-old was found dead late last Thursday at a cabin along Dunlap Hollow Road. On Tuesday, the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Thomas Muckler.

In an update, Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said Muckler left Madison at around 10 a.m. Thursday to go to the cabin. When he arrived, it is believed that he encountered a 23-year-old man who had broken into the cabin. It is unknown how long the younger man had been staying there…
