WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — It’s been nearly six years since the death of 2-year-old Jacob Aviles at a Wichita home, and now his mother, one of two people charged in his death, has been sentenced to prison.
Aviles was found dead inside a home in the 1100 block of West Munnell in October 2019. Investigators said the boy had extensive bruising consistent with abuse.
Two other children in the home, who were 6 years old and 5 years old at the time, were taken into protective custody at the time. Soon after, Stephanie Aviles and her boyfriend at the time, Bernardo Gonzalez-Mejia, who was reportedly taking care of the boy at the time of his death, were arrested in connection with his death.

In July, a jury found Aviles guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated endangering a child, and abuse of a child.
