FAA restarts bidding for new tower at Ted Stevens Airport

The restart of the bidding process has delayed the planned construction of a new air traffic control tower at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The FAA needs this new tower to meet growing operational demands. While construction was scheduled for summer 2025, the project is now postponed. However, airport officials state the current setup can manage operations during the delay.

“I think we can afford a delay, and I think we just have to work through some of these issues with the FAA. But we’re still excited that they want to invest in the Anchorage International Airport,” said Lex Yelverton with Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

The current tower has been here since the 1970s and looks over flights from both Lake Hood and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Aging infrastructure isn’t just a problem here in Alaska.
