Sugar Land’s new mayor carries the ex-mayor’s legacy

If an elected official advocating for a tax increase is like a fish taking to water, a taxpayer demanding tax increase would be like a fish out of water. When a former elected official, now a taxpayer, asks for a tax increase, that would be an odd fish out, defying any logic.

Former Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman was that odd man out, as he was the only person who spoke in favor of a proposed tax rate increase during public comments at a city council meeting.

Zimmerman told the council: “Your action here tonight requires thoughtful, deliberate, and bold action on your part to set up the next five to seven years of the voter approved $350 million bond election.” The tax increase is actually for the capital improvement, and it was voted on by the people.”…
