DMV revokes controversial license plate seen in the Capital Region

A viewer reached out to CBS6 with concerns about a custom license plate they saw while driving in Latham Tuesday night. The plate in question contained the word “ARYAN”. The viewer questioned why NYS DMV allowed “hate speech” on a personalized license plate.

CBS6 reached out to the DMV and in a response, the DMV says the plate in question has been revoked. In a statement explaining their process for handling personalized license plate requests, saying,

The DMV has a rigorous screening protocol for personalized license plate requests to prevent objectionable number and/or letter combinations from being issued. When complaints about an issued plate are received, the DMV carefully reviews the combination and, if needed, immediately moves to revoke the plate in question…
