Kroger employees, customers recount 2023 Waynedale stabbing in first day of trial

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A murder trial began Wednesday for a man that is accused of fatally stabbing a Waynedale Kroger employee in 2023 after being delayed for months.

The original court date was set for the beginning of March this year, but was postponed to Wednesday.

Jermard Lewis is accused of stabbing and killing a Kroger employee, Perla Nieto. There were family members of both Lewis and Nieto present in the courtroom as the trial began. The jury consisted of eight women, four men, and two male alternates.
