Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve in northern Greenville County will close for a preservation project from Sept. 29 through March 31, 2026, the state Department of Natural Resources announced Sept. 2.
During this time, there will be no access to the property. This includes complete closure of the Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve parking area.
Built in 1820, the bridge is the oldest standing structure of its kind in South Carolina and possibly the Southeast. The 130-foot Gothic arch bridge spans Little Gap Creek and was designed, it is widely believed, by Washington Monument architect Robert Mills. It was named after Joel Poinsett, an influential early resident of Greenville who served as U.S. ambassador to Mexico and for whom the Poinsettia was named.
