Fairhope mourns loss of beloved French Quarter feline ‘Fancy’

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — Fairhope’s favorite feline has sadly passed away, but ‘Fancy’ was more than just a cat — she was a French Quarter icon.

For more than a decade, Fancy, also known as Panther, Ms. P, and Meow-Meow, made herself at home along the streets of Fairhope’s French Quarter.

“Everybody named her different things, and she ended up being the queen of the French Quarter here,” Dayna and Bryan Jones, the cat’s caretakers, said. “A lot of people loved her every day. She ended up being a tourist attraction, practically.”

Sadly, Fancy had grown sick in recent months, and this week her caretakers had to say goodbye after a long life of love. They tell us that her veterinarians suspected she had developed a form of cancer due to old age, as she could be about 20 years old.

“She’s lived a good, long life,” Richard Brunson, one of the cat’s caretakers and the owner of the French Quarter, said. “We were here with her every day. I saw her grow up and change, and I’m gonna miss her.”

Fancy lived quite the life in the French Quarter, from meeting hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to even accidentally getting catnapped…
