S.F. takes aim at ‘dumb rules’ that Lurie administration says have to go

San Francisco residents can face hefty fines for parking in their own driveways. One couple found out the hard way when they received a $1,500 ticket from the city under a rule enacted decades ago.

Mayor Daniel Lurie announced on Tuesday a legislative package that he promised would put an “end to this maddening rule” — as well as a list of others like it. Lurie said a number of outdated permitting requirements have caused San Franciscans unnecessary hardship, have made operating small businesses in the city challenging, and have disincentivized new development and investment in historic properties.

The package aims to streamline city codes to cut red tape and represents the latest pieces of Permit SF, a larger effort launched by Lurie earlier this year to make the city’s permitting processes faster and more predictable…
