According to the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), more than 200 “No Turn on Red” signs have recently been installed across Montgomery County as part of the Safe Streets Act of 2023 (MC Bill 11-23). The measure requires MCDOT to add the signs to designated traffic lights unless a safety risk is identified.
The goal of the Safe Streets Act is to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety by restricting right turns on red at certain intersections. The legislation also includes provisions to increase walk times at crosswalks and require infrastructure reviews following incidents in school zones, walksheds, and bus stops.
Drivers are prohibited from making right turns at red traffic signals where “No Turn on Red” signs are posted, particularly in designated downtown and town center areas. Violations may result in a $90 fine and one point on the driver’s license, consistent with state regulations…
