Tuskegee Airmen’s legacy soars again with first new pilot since World War II

TUSKEGEE, Ala. — At Moton Field, the same airstrip where the legendary Tuskegee Airmen trained during World War II, a new chapter of aviation history has taken flight.

For the first time in nearly 80 years, Tuskegee University has a licensed pilot. Isaiah Hand, 20, of Tallahassee, Florida, earned his private pilot’s license this summer through the university’s relaunched aviation science program — becoming the first Tuskegee student to do so since the Airmen.

“I still haven’t been able to put into words myself,” Hand said. “The feeling is like no other. To be the first one in over eight, almost eight decades, is a monumental feeling.”…
