Northrup Shelter in NW Portland opens with low turnout

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The Northrup Shelter in Portland’s Pearl District is officially up and running, but not with the turnout many were expecting.

The shelter was prepared to accommodate up to 40 people Tuesday night, but according to shelter staff only about 10 beds were occupied by 10 p.m.

“The word apparently really has not gotten out in the homeless network, in the homeless community, that this is open tonight,” Portland City Councilor Olivia Clark said at the shelter’s opening. “I think it’s really a word of mouth thing that has to happen in the homeless community.”…
