KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Each spring as an undergraduate student at Western Michigan University, Maddie Christians was struck by how much waste was generated as students moved out of their dorms and apartments.
“So, if it doesn’t fit in the car, it’s just gonna go to the dumpsters,” Christians said. “A lot of that stuff is perfectly fine, and I’m not really trying to make a buck off of it. I really just want to be supporting the students.”
Now, a recent masters graduate, Christians hopes a new on-campus thrift store she helped spearhead will help improve sustainability and affordability for students.
