Tavern with ties to Revolutionary War times hitting the auction block

HAYCOCK TWP., Pa.- Before there was a Quakertown (founded in 1801), or even a country officially known as the United States of America (founded in 1776), there was a tavern along a stagecoach route where thirsty travelers could stop to wet their whistles or swap a story or two.

It’s still there today, serving up cold drinks and warm fellowship. And it needs a new steward to usher it into its next era.

The Raven’s Nest is the current tenant of 625 Old Bethlehem Pike in Haycock Township, just outside Quakertown in Bucks County. The stone and stucco building went up in 1710 and has operated as a tavern since 1750. The tavern, and the more-than eight-acre property that surrounds it, will be auctioned off on September 23.

Jill Kaercher with Alderfer Auction said current owner Albert Pray opened Raven’s Nest- named for his daughter- in the 1980s, and is now looking to retire. “He’s hoping that someone will continue to keep it for what it is, but he’s ready to move it along to a new owner.”…
