Katharine, the Duchess of Kent, passed away peacefully at Kensington Palace on Thursday evening, surrounded by her loved ones. She was 92. Buckingham Palace confirmed her death in a statement released Friday.

Born Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, the Duchess was married to Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, a cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Her passing leaves the Duke, 89, as the oldest living member of the Royal Family.

The Royal Family expressed their deep sorrow, noting the Duchess’s lifelong dedication to the numerous organizations she championed, her love of music, and her remarkable empathy for young people. King Charles and Queen Camilla, currently in Scotland, were informed of the Duchess’s death on Thursday.

Flags at royal residences, including Buckingham Palace, are being flown at half-mast. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

Condolences have poured in from around the world. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer offered his sympathies to the King and Royal Family, praising the Duchess’s tireless work ethic and compassionate nature.

He particularly highlighted her touching consolation of Wimbledon finalist Jana Novotna, a moment etched in the memories of many. The Duchess’s death comes as Prince Harry is scheduled to return to Britain next week for charity events.
