Parents rally behind beloved teacher, reassigned schools after pulling up carpet during flea infestation

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In a controversial move, a popular sixth-grade teacher has been assigned to a new school after she ripped up carpeting in her classroom.

It happened during a flea infestation at the school last year, and just this week—parents learned, as a result, she will not be returning to teach.

“Our school is heartbroken, and I think it will break the Phoebe spirit,” said Caitlin Beckett, a mom who currently has two kids at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School, in the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD).
