A legacy in the sky: Sibling duo honors parents’ memory in the ballooning world

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – For most people, watching a hot air balloon drift across the horizon or riding in the basket overlooking great scenery is a once in a lifetime experience. For siblings Brian and Kristina, it’s a family tradition that takes them back to their childhood, and the legacy of their late parents Kim and David Lynch.

Kim was a pioneer in the ballooning world — not only lifting spirits but lifting barriers. As the CEO and head pilot of the Reach for the Stars Hot Air Balloon Foundation, Kim championed accessibility in ballooning, designing one of the first wheelchair-accessible baskets and making the skies more inclusive for people of all abilities. Her passion took flight in so many ways: through tethered rides, school programs, special shape balloons, and a commitment to sharing the joy of ballooning with everyone she met.

David was a respected Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) who played a vital role in shaping the local ballooning community. He helped many pilots in our region earn their pilot certificates, generously sharing his time, knowledge, and encouragement…
