‘Conjuring: Last Rites’ takes its time getting to big scares

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The only way to enjoy “The Conjuring: Last Rites” is to have an endless supply of patience. Those who expect big scares and lots of blood will eventually get their wish but the first hour of the film is all about developing the characters.

There is no need to spend time talking about Ed and Lorraine Warren as played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. They were not in all 10 movies in the “Conjuring” franchise but appeared in enough that you know the film is based on a real couple who helped people deal with the supernatural.

All you need to know about them is that the film by director Michael Chaves offers a glimpse of how the pair got started in their unusual profession and through the case with the Smurl family that made the couple sorry they had come out of retirement. They had been using the excuse that they wanted to travel and teach but the film continues the storyline that Ed no longer has the heart to chase things that go bump in the night. He literally doesn’t have the heart for it as his doctors told him one more heart attack would kill him…
