New Albany mayor goes after River Heritage and Origin Park again

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan is once again commenting in opposition to the 430-acre Origin Park project and continuing to double down on his efforts to block the removal of the Providence Mill Dam.

After 14-year-old Andre Edwards, Jr. drowned at the dam, the mayor placed rock fill without state approval at its base. Mayor Gahan said the rock-fill was placed at the base of the dam for “emergency maintenance” to eliminate the hydraulic roller effect created by the dam. The state did not authorize the rock fill, and the action has led to a new legal fight between Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources and the City of New Albany.

Just one week ago, an appeals court shot down the city’s continued attempt to block the removal of the Providence Mill Dam, for which IDNR issued a permit to River Heritage and ECI in 2021…
