Sacramento World War II Veteran and Former POW Ken Mar Celebrates 100th Birthday

Sacramento veteran Ken Mar, a World War II Army hero and former prisoner of war, celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by fellow veterans from the Gung Ho American Legion.The group gathered Thursday to honor Mar with a special cake, candles, and a chorus of “Happy Birthday.” His fellow servicemen described him as a symbol of courage and resilience for Asian Americans who served in World War II.“We’re proud to have him in our post,” said Freeman Lee, a member of the Legion. “Ken is a good representative of Chinese Americans who served for our country, especially in World War II.”Mar’s military story began when he was drafted into the Army at age 18. He joined the 2nd Infantry Division and was sent to Omaha Beach just days after D-Day, replacing soldiers lost in the fighting.
