DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird hosted a formal ceremony Thursday to announce a new agreement with the Meskwaki Nation.
AG Bird said the new agreement means that Meskwaki officers may now act as certified peace officers, even if pursuit of a suspect leads them off of their settlement. It will also allow Iowa State Patrol to continue pursuits that begin off the settlement onto it.
“For example, a Tribal officer who observes an impaired driver may detain the driver for investigation, even if the stop occurs off the Settlement, and a trial court won’t suppress the evidence thinking the officer lacked authority to make the stop,” a release from Bird’s office says…
