Asheville: A man wanted in a recent shooting turned himself in to police, authorities said Thursday. Juan Francisco Martinez Jr., 36, surrendered on charges including assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault by pointing a gun and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Asheville Police Department. Martinez was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $50,000 secured bond. Police said the case remains under investigation.
Hendersonville: Former Hendersonville Police Chief Larry Hesser, who modernized the department and later served as president of the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, has died. Hesser, who led the department from 1979 to 1987, died Aug. 28 in Texas surrounded by family, the agency said.
