From California to Tennessee, Extreme Weather Brings Rescues, Evacuations and Damage

WEATHER — Beaches drew large crowds over Labor Day weekend, one of the three busiest weekends of the summer, according to lifeguards at Newport Beach.

But swimming in the ocean proved more dangerous than usual.

“We have some surf that’s been building through the week, and what happens with that high surf is that increases the strength and the size of our rip currents out there, and that’s reflected in the number of rescues you see.
