During the afternoon of September 7, authorities in St. Louis County were notified of a distress signal coming from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA).
Police say the signal was sent from a Garmin safety device, and gave coordinates of the injured person as west of Contest Lake in the BWCA, near the Stuart River Portage area, which is located northwest of Ely, Minnesota. Garmin notified authorities that person who sent the signal possibly had broken their leg.
Authorities, including the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, along with the Morse Township Fire Deparment, Minnesota State Patrol’s MART (Minnesota Air Rescue Team) and Lifelink Helicopter service responded to rescue the injured party…
