One of America’s oldest covered bridges still in use is getting a major facelift. The City of Allentown announced that Bogert’s Covered Bridge, built in 1841, will undergo extensive rehabilitation work beginning Sept. 15.
The 184-year-old structure will close to all traffic, including pedestrians, through at least August 2026 as contractor HPCI tackles comprehensive improvements. The project includes correcting the bridge’s sag, rehabilitating its siding, painting the structure, and installing a new slate roof.
“Bogert’s Covered Bridge is an icon, but one that our city had neglected for far too long,” said Mayor Matt Tuerk. “By taking responsibility for these needed upgrades, my administration will ensure that Allentownians can connect with our history for generations to come.”…
