“Pawn Stars” Rick Harrison Snags Vintage Pepsi Cooler

Rick Harrison, the shrewd negotiator of “Pawn Stars” fame, surprised viewers recently by purchasing a vintage Pepsi cooler, despite its condition. Known for his tough bargaining tactics, Harrison often lets valuable items slip away if the price isn’t right. So, his purchase of a somewhat battered cooler raised a few eyebrows.

The cooler’s seller, who originally bought it for $750 fifteen years prior, was hoping to recoup his investment. However, Harrison and his son, Corey, managed to snag the piece for a cool $350.

The red and yellow cooler, a departure from Pepsi’s usual blue and red branding, dates back to the 1930s. While the seller initially believed refrigerators weren’t around at that time, Harrison clarified that refrigeration existed, but rural areas often lacked electricity. These coolers were essential for small stores and gas stations to keep Pepsi chilled and ready for sale.

Harrison pointed out the “Double Size” marking on the cooler, a relic of the early “cola wars” between Pepsi and Coca-Cola. He explained that both companies initially sold 6-ounce bottles for a nickel, but Pepsi’s introduction of a 12-ounce bottle ignited their rivalry. The seller even recounted using the cooler at softball games, though it likely held more than just cola.

Despite a noticeable dent, Harrison confidently purchased the cooler, noting that vintage Coke and Pepsi items sell regardless of condition. He recognized the potential for a quick turnaround and a decent profit.

Initially, the seller asked for $750, a price Corey Harrison quickly dismissed. He estimated a couple thousand dollars in restoration costs, potentially raising the resale value to $3,000.

His initial offer of $200 was countered with $500. Eventually, they settled on $350, a price that satisfied Harrison and, although slightly less than desired, worked for the seller.
