Wake County Public Libraries is shaking things up with a fresh take on library access; in the digital age where our phones are almost extensions of ourselves, they’re handing us the keys to a kingdom of knowledge right in our pockets. As announced by Wake County, they’ve rolled out WCPL Mobile, the new app that’s downloadable on iOS and Android devices—just in time for Library Card Sign-up Month, a nod to continue fostering community and literacy in this tech era.
“Library cards already open the door to millions of books, resources and programs every year,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters, cementing the traditional library card’s role while welcoming the virtual turn, as reported by the source, but now with the WCPL Mobile, cardholders have their library card, can manage accounts and track due dates, search the catalog for books, and request pickup at any location, also they can link family members’ accounts on a single device, among other features.
The app isn’t just an electronic pass to the stacks; it’s a hub for all things library-related. In the past year, 280,000 cardholders foot the bill for over 11.8 million items across the system—numbers that signal a vast amount of interaction with the library’s offerings. The app aims to streamline and accentuate this engagement, providing easy navigation and connectivity for an increasing mobile-oriented user base. Wake County locals have the perk of grabbing their first card gratis provided they show a valid photo ID and proof of residence, minors require the signature of a parent or guardian, while educators in the area have access to a free teacher card, and for those living outside the county, there’s a $25 yearly membership on offer…
