RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is set to undergo a significant upgrade.
Preparations are in motion for a major renovation and expansion, which will lead to the temporary closure of specific exhibits and gallery spaces.
Beginning on September 16, 2025, both the Paul and Rachel Mellon Collections of European Art and Sporting Art will be taken off view, and their respective galleries will close for the duration of the museum’s expansion and renovation project. Marble Hall, an event space within the museum that houses Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #541 (1987), will also be closed during this period.
The VMFA, ranking among the top ten comprehensive art museums in the U.S., currently spans 718,831 square feet. The upcoming expansion involves building the McGlothlin Wing II, which will add about 173,000 square feet of new gallery space dedicated to American, Indigenous American, contemporary, and African art, along with a special exhibition gallery.
