Worcester County Wonders: The cow tunnel of Charlton continues to provide safe passage

CHARLTON — The Midstate Trail runs nearly 100 miles from the Rhode Island border to the New Hampshire border, traversing the beauty of Central Massachusetts along the way.

Woodlands, lake shores, swamps, mountains, meadows and brooks decorate the trail, which is marked by yellow triangles, but it is a long-forgotten tunnel specifically made for a herd of cows that remains one of its most fascinating features.

What locals call the “cow tunnel” can be found underneath Route 20 in Charlton, built after the roadway cut through a farm, leaving the livestock without safe passage…
