Metal detector screenings are now required for all WAHS staff, students, and visitors. New security policies implemented by the Albemarle County School Board are impacting the students’ morning drop-off and entrance into the school.
According to an email sent out by the ACPS board, the metal detectors are “modern, non-invasive devices.” Although the weapons screening system is supposed to be quick and seamless, there are some items that cannot pass through. To go through the metal detectors, students must remove their laptops from their backpacks, along with any three-ring binders, and pass them to security personnel or staff assisting with the security screening.
Many are concerned about the new metal detectors blocking the flow of students into WAHS every morning and potentially causing tardies, especially because of the new attendance policy.
