Mayoral and sheriff hopefuls discuss protections for LGBTQIA+ people at candidate forum

Candidates running for public office in New Orleans answered questions about how they plan to serve the LGBTQIA+ community at a forum organized by a group of local LGBTQIA+ leaders at McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School on Saturday (Sept. 6).

The audience numbered roughly two dozen people, composed primarily of event organizers and campaign volunteers. The forum, which lasted all day and also included City Council races, was one of dozens that have been hosted in the lead-up to the October 11 primary.

Mayoral hopefuls talked about their commitment to the queer community, while candidates for sheriff were asked about how they would increase protections for transgender prisoners and their stance on President Donald Trump’s proposal to deploy National Guard troops to police American cities, potentially including New Orleans…
