Shreveport officials plan to deal with bad landlords

SHREVEPORT, La – Bad landlords in Shreveport who let their properties go into disrepair and don’t pay their water bills was a major topic at Monday’s property standards meeting.

One complex KTBS highlighted recently was the Cambridge Court Apartments were residents said the water could be turned off because the landlord hasn’t paid the bill. KTBS also dug deeper and found the property owner, former Shreveport City Councilman Jeff Hogan, owes the city thousands of dollars in overdue taxes.

“Our constituents are renting from these landlords. They are increasing their rent, which we don’t have any control over and charging them whatever fees, that they need to be in compliance. Because at what point are you renting them an apartment that is in violation,” said Tabatha Taylor, City Council chairwoman.

“The fire department is planning on doing a lot of the certificate of occupancy and putting it into a record because we understand that there are a lot of businesses that don’t go through the MPC and are operating illegally, but we wouldn’t know that unless we go there for a preplan,” said Fire Chief Clarence Reese…
