Anna Daly writes: With lead and silver being discovered in North Idaho in 1884, many mining towns and mills popped up across the state.

However, one town in particular stands out for its tight squeeze in the middle of a narrow canyon — and for being home to several prominent Idaho mines, including the Hercules, Hecla, and Tiger-Poorman mines.

Burke Canyon, which is where the town of Burke was built, was just 300 feet wide. Because of this, buildings and other landmarks were constructed to fit within the small space…
