LIST: 9/11 Memorial events happening in East Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — 2025 marks 24 years since the terrorist attacks left nearly 3,000 Americans and international citizens dead and thousands more injured. Multiple memorial events in East Tennessee are expected to take place.

Knoxville 9/11 anniversary wreath-laying

Knoxville Police Chief Paul Noel, Knoxville Fire Department Stan Sharp and other Knoxville leaders will be observing the anniversary of the September 11, 2021 terrorist attacks with a wreath-laying ceremony beginning at 8:40 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the 9/11 Memorial on the lawn of the City County Building, which is located at 400 Main Street in Knoxville.

At 8:46 a.m. a moment of silence will be observed. This will be followed by the ringing of the First Baptist Church bells, marking the time that hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, a moment of silence will be observed.

Community leaders will then present a wreath and flowers at the base of the 9/11 monument, followed by a ceremony led by KPD Chaplain Pam Neal, with KFD Chaplain Paul Trumpore offering the benediction.

Because of the event and for public safety, Main Street will be closed between Walnut and Gay streets starting at 8 a.m., with the road expected to reopen by 9:15 a.m.
