Mother details harrowing domestic violence abuse in fight to break trauma cycle

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Maggie Benjamin says she spent three days locked in a bathroom with her baby crying just beyond the door. She calls her escape from domestic violence a turning point — and today, she calls herself a thriver.

“I do identify as a thriver, and what that means is someone who has gone past their experiences of abuse and been able to actually enjoy life and do the things that bring them joy,” said Benjamin.

But before that chapter, her life was marked by abuse and sexual violence. She says the breaking point came when her baby was just five months old…
