California Wildfire Map, Update as Blaze Rips Through Homes

Multiple wildfires continued to burn across California as of Tuesday, while a fire in San Diego County reportedly destroyed multiple homes on Monday.

According to the Western Fire Chiefs Association, California faces fire risk year-round, but peak fire season varies. In Northern California, it typically runs from June or July through late October or November. Meanwhile, in Southern California, it starts earlier, running from May or June through October.

What To Know

As of early Tuesday morning, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) had 21 fires listed on its website as “currently active incidents,” with the size of these varying from 16 acres to over 130,000.

The largest of these was the Gifford fire in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. According to Cal Fire, it had burned more than 131,000 acres and was at 98 percent containment.
