Chapin man charged with murder, kidnapping in Newberry homicide case

NEWBERRY, S.C. — A Chapin man has been arrested in connection with a homicide and kidnapping that began Thursday night in Newberry and spanned multiple counties, authorities announced on Monday.

David Ray Clark, 53, is charged with murder, two counts of kidnapping, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain crimes, and unlawfully placing a child at risk of harm, according to Newberry Police Chief Kevin Goodman.

Police said the case began after a call Friday morning reported a shooting at College Park Apartments. When officers forced entry into the unit, they say they found 53-year-old Dexter Tobias Gary, Sr. of Pomaria dead from a gunshot wound.
