Jackson leaders hold off on approving ordinance requiring permits for panhandling

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson city officials are holding off on voting on an ordinance that would require panhandlers to obtain permits before soliciting in public areas.

The City Council was set to vote on the proposed rules on Tuesday, but held off, in part, after some council members were uncomfortable voting.

“Just because you have the votes to pass is not a reason to vote,” said Ward Two Councilwoman Tina Clay. “You may have the votes to pass a lot of things, but you need to take into consideration and do business right in this city.”…
