North Charleston sees drop in violent crime, police credit community collaboration

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Violent crime decreased by double-digits in August compared to the same time last year, according to data released by the North Charleston Police Department Tuesday afternoon.

Notable to law enforcement was the significant reduction in homicides and robberies in the newly released data. North Charleston police believe that it is a mark of improvements in crime prevention strategies and the “strength of community partnership.”

Law enforcement officials touted a 12 percent decrease in total violent crime, a 36 percent drop in homicides, a 13 percent drop in aggravated assaults, and a 5 percent drop in aggravated assaults with firearms, said Josh Silva, a crime prevention officer with the North Charleston Police Department.
