MILITARY MATTERS: New “We Care Vet Fair” coming to Columbus on September 12

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Ten percent of people who live in Columbus are veterans. And the city is hosting a first-of-its-kind WE CARE VET FAIR this week. We talked to a local war hero about what fellow veterans – and soldiers leaving the Army – can expect at this free event.

“I commanded a tank company team during the invasion of Iraq,” former Fort Benning Garrison Commander and Choose Columbus Vice President BG (Ret) Andy Hilmes said.

Back in April 2003, now Retired Brigadier General Andy Hilmes led the “Thunder Runs” – the first armored attacks into Baghdad, showing bravery in war that earned him the Silver Star, but he also lost a good friend and fellow soldier Staff Sgt Steve Booker…
