‘Is this now the norm?’: Horry County Board of Education talks school choice, withdrawals

Horry County Schools Superintendent Clifford Jones listened to a lengthy conversation regarding school choice, the marketing efforts of the district and more at a board work session on Monday, Sept. 8.

Among the topics discussed by the HCS Board of Education was withdrawal information since the start of the 2025-26 school year.

Velna Allen, HCS’ chief officer of student services, reported to the board that 2,475 students have withdrawn from HCS since the first day of school.
