Spokane County Commissioners respond to request for more judges amid backlog

SPOKANE, Wash. — On Tuesday, Spokane County’s Board of Commissioners responded to a request from the Spokane County Bar Association to add three more Superior Court judges, as thousands of cases remain at a standstill.

The Bar Association believes additional judges would help address the mounting backlog. In its letter to the Bar, the Board acknowledged the need but said current and projected budget constraints prevent immediate action.

In its letter, the Board said its budget allocation for 2026 remains the same as 2025. It said, “The Budget Office projects flat revenue and growing costs with a projected deficit of $20 million in 2026, growing to $70 million in 2030.”…
