HONOLULU (KHON2) — It’s a busy intersection in town – Kalakaua and South Beretania Street. But for people who live nearby, it’s also dangerous. Residents say they’ve been asking for years for improvements, but nothing has changed. So they contacted Action Line.
Man, 28, dies following Waialua motor vehicle collision
The crosswalk at Kalakaua and South Beretania- cars speeding by, stoplights barely slowing traffic, and pedestrians caught in the middle. For people living here, it’s not just inconvenient, they say it’s downright dangerous.
“The light changed and I was crossing the street and all the lanes had stopped,” said Willie Thomas, who drives a mobility scooter. “Everybody stopped, and soon as I got there, she didn’t seem to wanna stop. I just had to dive off and she just ran the scooter over and everybody there going what the heck?”
Thomas wasn’t injured, but he was without his scooter for several weeks while it underwent repairs. It happened two years ago, and he says they never caught the hit-and-run driver…
